NCC Vo-Tech Hosts Signing Day With a Twist

A group of seniors representing all four NCC Vo-Tech high schools who have been offered jobs after graduation by their co-op employers were honored May 1, at a Job Signing Ceremony, featuring remarks by U.S. Senator Chris Coons. Patterned after the way high school athletes sign with colleges, the schools’ Co-Op Coordinators identified 13 students and 11 different company representatives who could attend the event. Each student and employer representative signed a certificate of congratulations, as their Career Program instructors and parents looked on.

“Like high school athletes who commit to colleges, we wanted to showcase our career “athletes,” who have demonstrated their career readiness, and have received offers from companies to begin their employment journey after graduation,” School District Superintendent Vicki Gehrt told the audience. “We are proud of our business partners who have agreed to employ our students, we are proud of our teachers who provide expert instruction to get them there, and of their parents who encourage them, but we are most proud of our students who have put in the effort to learn skills and earn credentials that will propel them into the workforce ahead of their peers. We know there are many paths to achieving success. Not every student will head to college. These students represent a path to securing a fulfilling job, earning high wages, and creating a future for themselves that is free from the burden of student loans.”

Senator Coons said he was happy to be celebrating with the students. “The people here who are signing you on have been watching you, and have determined you are ready for the next level,” he said, “which is amazing when you think that you have not yet finished high school.”
